Picking a Color Scheme

Color affects your mood and behavior, a potential client's perceptions of your company, sales of your products, and more. Consider how colors are used in your company marketing materials from your logo and web site to your business cards and brochures.

RED: Action, power, courage, strength, warmth, energy, stimulation, masculinity, excitement. Red encourages buyers to take action and make a purchase. For example, it could be used to tempt an impulse buy or for a 'buy now' button on a website. Red can be used as one of the colors on your website to indicate your energy and passion for your business.

PINK: Physical tranquillity, nurture, warmth, femininity, love, sexuality, compassion, intuition. Pink reflects a softness, sweetness and intuitive energy that works well for many products and web sites promoting women's products and services. It is a beneficial color for candy stores, bakeries, and other businesses selling sweet products. Dusty pink relates to those businesses marketing sentimental services and products, particularly to the older market.

ORANGE: Sociable, optimistic, cheerful, vibrant, food, warmth, security, sensuality, passion, abundance, fun. Travel websites often use orange as one of their color choices for its association with journeys, adventure and exciting fun activities. Sports teams use orange to suggest energy and adventure. Orange is an appealing color for the youth market as children and teens tend to like its sense of fun and adventure and its suggestion of affordability. A softer version of orange, such as peach is favorable in beauty salons, spas and treatment centers and upper class restaurants.

Build a Better Web Site

If you are developing a personal site, the only limiting factor is your imagination. If you are designing a business site, some common sense (and a little restraint) comes into play.

A professional-looking site goes a long way to establishing you and your business as legitimate and trustworthy. It doesn't have to be fancy, but a nice, clean design is essential.

I am often surprised at the number of emails I receive from people who think building a website should be quick and easy. In some ways it is. After all, it isn't rocket science. The more you know, the easier it is. If you have the right tools (software) and the right knowledge, you can design a site to rival the "big boys."

Blog Redesign

I had a friend once tell me that he had come to the conclusion that redesigning a website is the seven-layer taco dip of hell. It made me laugh. Sure... it's time consuming, requires learning some things you might not know, and sometimes copious amounts of alcohol, but it isn't all that bad. Right? Yeah, right!

There's still some work to be done, a bit of tweaking here and there, and some things I really need to learn how to do. But today I'm going to catch up on some sleep and finish my laundry. Happy blogging.

So when I decided to clean up my old blog (out with the old, in with the new), I knew I also wanted to ditch the old template. The plan was to use one of my own templates and convert it to the Blogger platform. After all, how hard could it be? To my friend, I can only say "I feel your pain."

It started with looking for tutorials on how to make a Blogger template. That was followed by a few hours of looking at YouTube videos. I jotted down notes, captured screenshots, and then decided to just dive into the deep end of the pool. About 40 hour and a few bottles of wine later (not all at one sitting), this is the result. Enjoy!

Choosing the Right Template

Whether you are a new business or a well-established one looking to refresh your image, templates are an economical and convenient way to create a professional looking site. A well-designed template gives a great first impression that conveys trust, dependability, and professionalism.

Start your search by looking for templates that you find pleasing and are appropriate to your business. Keep your visitors in mind. If your site targets younger visitors, your design could be more modern. If your audience is older, a conventional look may be more pleasing. It's a good idea to see how other businesses in your industry are presenting themselves online.

Oops! Card Declined

It happens. Something went wrong when you were trying to buy something online. Using your credit card or debit card to make an online purchase is a two-step process consisting of an authorization and a settlement.

  • The most common reason a transaction fails is when the name on the card, the billing address, the zip code, and the 3-digit code do not all match during the verification process. This is called an AVS mismatch. Merchants typically have little to no control over how or why a card is approved or declined.
  • Another common mistake is simple typing errors. Check your spelling and make sure you did not transpose numbers.
  • Make sure that the billing address matches the card you are using. Many times people have a billing address for work and one for home. If you used your "home" credit card with your "work" billing address, your card will be declined.

What to do next...

Starting Over

We're putting the blog back online. I know we've been through more than one dance with different blogging platforms, but I've gone back to Blogger just because it's quick and easy and I know it won't step on my toes.

There are some topics I feel might be of use and they just don't fit on my sites or on the Help Center. Not very appropriate for Facebook either.

For those who've been following along through all of this, all of the old posts are gone. Yep, deleted, erased, vanished, kaput! It's a new year and time to start fresh. So hang around, bookmark the site, and drop in as I work to add new tips, template information, and probably a few rants and raves along the way.
